Nature based Therapy

Healing doesn't always happen within four walls.

Step outside and into a space where calm, connection, and meaning can unfold naturally.

"Be still and listen

to the voices that belong
to the stream banks and the trees

and the open fields.

Find your hope, then,

on the ground under your feet."

WENDELL BERRY, "A Poem on Hope"

We know from experience that spending time outdoors can lift our mood and help us unwind.

It’s why many of us vacation at the beach or the mountains, enjoy dining outside, going to outdoor concerts, or taking a walk with a friend.

Nature based therapy uses the natural environment as a tool to work toward your therapeutic goals. Nature based therapy, also called nature informed therapy or forest therapy, has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve self-esteem and motivation, and increase feelings of overall wellbeing.

If you choose to invite nature into our work together, we’ll choose a focus and make a plan for the session. We’ll select a location from among several scenic parks and wooded trails in Hillsborough, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Our plan will address safety, privacy, and logistics so you feel supported every step of the way.

In nature based therapy, we may…

  • Walk along a winding path as you untangle conflicting thoughts and emotions.

  • Slow down and practice noticing the details of your present experience.

  • Climb to a hilltop view to spark fresh perspective on a decision or goal.

  • Find a quiet place to sit in stillness, soothing the nervous system and calming the mind.
