Therapy for Burnout Recovery
How can I stop running on empty and create a life that feels sustainable?
More calm. Deeper connection. Greater meaning.
You've been holding it all together. But how long can you keep going this way?
Maybe you're exhausted even after a full night's sleep. Your mind rarely stops running, and the things that once brought you joy now feel like one more thing on your list. You may be getting everything done, but at the cost of your energy, relationships, or your sense of self.
Burnout can look like more than exhaustion. You may be functioning well on the outside while feeling completely depleted on the inside. Burnout can show up as irritability, difficulty concentrating, emotional numbness, loss of motivation, trouble resting, or feeling disconnected from things that once mattered to you.
Sometimes the hardest part is that you don't know how to stop. Even when you're exhausted, slowing down can bring up guilt, anxiety, or the feeling that there's always something else you should be doing.
Burnout isn't a personal failure. It's a sign that the way you've been coping and caring for everything around you is no longer sustainable.
Therapy can help you slow down, understand what your mind and body are asking for, and find a different way forward. We’ll create the life you want, with room for rest, boundaries, connection, and the things that matter to you.
You may be experiencing burnout if…
-
You feel like you’re always “on” or responsible for something.
-
Rest makes you feel guilty.
-
You're constantly taking care of everyone else's needs.
-
You feel detached, irritable, or emotionally depleted.
-
You can't remember the last time you did something simply because you wanted to.
In therapy, we'll explore…
-
What’s kept you running on empty
-
The expectations you carry
-
Your relationship with rest and productivity
-
Boundaries and sustainable ways of caring for yourself
-
What you want your life to feel like (not just what you need to accomplish)
Therapy can help you slow down long enough to understand what's underneath your exhaustion and begin creating a way of living that feels more sustainable.
Together, we'll explore the expectations, habits, and patterns that keep you in constant "go" mode. We'll make space to listen to what your mind and body are telling you. As you reconnect with your own needs, you’ll develop practical ways to care for yourself that don’t feel like another item on your to-do list.
Our goal is to help you build a life that leaves room for rest, connection, and the things that matter to you.
The Tools We Use
I draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Narrative Therapy, integrating the approaches that best fit your goals and the way you experience burnout.
ACT can help you recognize the expectations and "shoulds" that keep you pushing beyond your limits. We'll clarify what truly matters to you and explore ways to make choices and take action that are guided by your values instead of by guilt, fear, or the pressure to keep up.
IFS offers a compassionate way to understand the parts of you that keep pushing, pleasing, planning, or taking care of everyone else. Rather than judging these patterns, we'll get curious about what they're trying to protect and strengthen your calm, compassionate Core Self to help create a healthier balance.
Narrative Therapy helps you examine the stories you've internalized about productivity, responsibility, success, and what it means to be "enough." We'll look for exceptions to those old stories to build flexibility and perspective, and we’ll write new ones that highlight your resilience, needs, values, and strengths.
Calm • Connection • Meaning
Three things we're working toward.
Calm so you don't have to be "on" all the time.
Connection with yourself, your needs, and the parts of life that may have gotten pushed aside.
Meaning beyond your next accomplishment or obligation.
What to Expect
Sessions are offered securely via telehealth, so you can make space for therapy without adding travel time to an already-full schedule. We'll typically meet weekly or biweekly, depending on what feels appropriate for your goals.
Sessions are collaborative and tailored to you. No need to arrive with a perfectly organized plan for recovery. We'll start where you are, identify what feels most important, and take the next step together.
