FAQs

Here are some of the questions I hear most frequently from new clients.

If you don't see an answer to your specific question, please reach out! I'm here to help.

What is therapy like?

Therapy is time for you, whatever you choose to make of it. At its core, it’s a conversation. It’s talking to someone who thinks the best of you, and doesn’t judge even your worst moments. Someone who believes that you are enough and that you have what it takes. Who feels your pain and your joy, and truly wants to see the real you. Someone who is deeply invested in helping you grow, in whatever directions you choose.

Therapy doesn’t always feel comfortable, but you should always feel supported. You can tell me exactly what’s on your mind. My job as your therapist is to help you feel safe to say the hard things out loud.

How do I pick the right therapist?

The #1 predictor of success in therapy is the vibe. Seriously! If you feel like your therapist gets you and supports you, you’re way more likely to get better. This is true regardless of the type of therapy used.

That’s why many therapists, including myself, offer free consultations. It’s important that you have an opportunity to get a sense of who I am and how I work, so that you know whether I’m a good fit for you. If you choose not to move forward after we chat, there are no hard feelings! I can even suggest some other therapists who might be a better match.

What can I expect in our first session?

Lots of questions! :) I’ll ask you to share a bit about what brings you to therapy as part of your intake paperwork before we meet. This gives us a starting point to explore your unique context. I’ll ask what words like “anxious” or “depressed” mean for you. We’ll dig into the felt and lived experiences that shape your current situation. We’ll shine some light on your strengths and values to get a better idea of where you’d like to be and how you might like to get there.

It’s a lot of ground to cover, which is why I typically schedule 90 minutes for our first appointment. (Don’t worry, if that’s a barrier, we can stick to 60 minutes.) Over the course of our first few sessions, we'll get clear on your goals for therapy and then develop a plan together using the approaches that fit you best.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy, or telehealth, makes it easier to fit therapy into your day: you can join our sessions from the location and device that’s most convenient for you.

We’ll meet face-to-face on a secure, HIPAA-compliant video call. You can choose to receive your appointment link by email or text message, download the app, or join via web browser in your secure client portal. When it’s time for your session, just click the link on your phone, tablet or computer.

Online therapy allows me to work with clients across the state of North Carolina and reduces barriers like additional travel time and transportation for my clients.

Can I use insurance?

Yes! I’m in network with Aetna. For other plans, I’m considered an out-of-network provider. You may still be able to use your insurance: many plans will reimburse between 50% - 70% of costs after meeting a deductible.

If your insurance includes out-of-network benefits, I will provide you with a detailed monthly statement (“superbill”) to submit for reimbursement or to be put toward your deductible.

6

How do I find out if my insurance will reimburse me for out-of-network therapy?

You can check your coverage by asking your insurer the following questions:

  • Do I have mental health benefits?

  • What is my deductible, and has it been met?

  • How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?

  • What is my cost/copay per therapy session?

  • Is prior authorization needed from my insurance company before therapy starts?

Questions? Send me a message, I’m here to help.
